When it comes to internet marketing, the most important thing that you can do from an SEO standpoint is link building.  Finding ways to increase the amount of quality backlinks to your website does more to establish the authority of your website than any other single task.  The flip side of that s that getting bad links from garbage sites, or too many links too quickly can do more damage than just about anything else you can do.

In order for you to get the most out of your link building efforts, you should be looking for sites that have either high page rank, or high authority, preferably in a niche related to yours.  Find ways to get links from those sites that involves attaching those links to unique content within those sites.  The best way to do that is by offering to guest post.  This is a win/win for both of you because the site owner gets fresh, unique content (written by you), and you get one or two anchored backlinks from a quality site.

Another way to get good backlinks is to offer to exchange links with those sites.  Some things to remember when looking for link exchanges are:

  • One-way links are better than reciprocal links
  • In content links are better than blogroll links
  • Links on “links” pages are not as good as blogroll links
  • Blogroll links from big sites can actually hurt you if your site is too new
  • Try to stay away from sites with a huge amount of external links
  • Pagerank is good, but ranking high in the serps is better

One thing that you want to stay away from is running around leaving generic comments on people’s blogs to get backlinks.  Usually, comments links are “nofollow” and give you no juice.  The other thing is that, unless you read the post you are commenting on, and your comment reflects that fact, you will probably get your comment deleted, and might build a bad reputation for yourself and your site.

Stick to strategies that show respect for your fellow webmasters, and you will see yourself rising quickly in pagerank and the search engine results pages.  Show a lack of respect in your link building efforts and you could see your internet business go completely the wrong direction. That certainly is not the way to make money online now is it?
